Mise-en-scene in films
💵
I decided to comment on the 2018 movie "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." directed by Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman. This is my all time favorite movie because of the art style, humor, music and characters. I knew it would be easy to write about because the Mise-en-scene elements in this film are very prevalent and well-done.
There are four areas of Mise-en-scene executed in this film. The first of which is setting. For this component, I'm going to refer to Uncle Aaron's apartment. In the beginning of the movie, when Miles first visits, the apartment has a warm, cozy and inviting feeling. It has warm lighting, rich colors, comfortable furniture and sparks of personality. This lends well to Uncle Aarons character because he is the "cool uncle". It makes sense that his apartment is relaxed. Later in the film when Miles in running from the Prowler, he decides to hide in his uncles apartment. This time the apartment is washed in blue and purple light, giving it a cold feeling. The apartment has lost its life, it feels dead. This makes sense because of the reveal that is about to take place, however I cannot say what because it spoils the movie.
The next area of Mise-en-scene is lighting. After the collider intentionally explodes in the beginning of the movie, Miles wakes up in the rubble. It is dark, grey and dreary. Miles finds Spider-Man under rubble and he doesn't look good. Spiderman tells Miles to run before Kingpin and his goons come. As Kingpin, comes up with his goons, Spider-Man is the only bright color, even though it more drowned out then normal. The dark lighting sets the tone for the scene, because here Spider-Man dies. The lighting in the collider before it exploded was bright white, almost clinical, giving an off-putting vibe.
Costume is a very important aspect in a film. It gives insight into the character and their motives. The original Spider-Man every one knows has the bright red and blue one piece suit with the mask. Miles Morales spray painted his suit to be black and red. He is also scene wearing the suit with a hoodie, shorts and Jordan's. This choice shows that Miles is unique and creative.
The last area of Mise-en-scene is staging. When all the more experienced Spider-people meet Miles in the Spider-Man version of the Bat Cave, they bombard Miles with many hard questions. Miles feels like he isn't as power as everyone else is. This is shown though staging because everyone is on one side looking down at Miles.
